I think for ...

James - thanks for pointing this out. I think for many of the news articles out there, it was assumed to be a sure thing. Apparently there are a few hindrances in Perelman's way: for instance, to be eligible for the prize money, a proof must be published in a peer-reviewed venue. Here's a bit about it from a 2006 New Yorker article:

"By mid-July, Perelman had posted the final two installments of his proof on the Internet, and mathematicians had begun the work of formal explication, painstakingly retracing his steps. In the United States, at least two teams of experts had assigned themselves this task: Gang Tian (Yau’s rival) and John Morgan; and a pair of researchers at the University of Michigan. Both projects were supported by the Clay Institute, which planned to publish Tian and Morgan’s work as a book. The book, in addition to providing other mathematicians with a guide to Perelman’s logic, would allow him to be considered for the Clay Institute’s million-dollar prize for solving the Poincaré. (To be eligible, a proof must be published in a peer-reviewed venue and withstand two years of scrutiny by the mathematical community.)"

So it looks like the Clay Institute would love to award Perelman the prize. But since that article I haven't seen any updates on whether they've been able to or not. As for whether Perelman would accept or decline the million, we'll have to leave that to speculation. Again from the New Yorker:

Perelman would not say whether his objection to awards extended to the Clay Institute’s million-dollar prize. "I’m not going to decide whether to accept the prize until it is offered," he said.

Here's the rest of the New Yorker article, in case you're curious.

Watch these excellent dimensions math videos to he...

Watch these excellent dimensions math videos to help you think in four dimensions.

The Clay prize has never formally been offered to ...

The Clay prize has never formally been offered to Perelman.
